A short list of random pet peeves from the last few days:
1. On the news this evening.
TV reporter voiceover, "Bob Smith tells us about the amazing rescue."
Bob Smith, "It was an amazing rescue!"
2. Hardcover books that have pages with widths that are not evenly cut. Recent examples include Quicksilver and Balance of Power.
3. Stupid not-showing-up-when-they-say-they-will realtors.
5. Food commericals for stuff that looks really good but has roughly 1,645,963 points* per half cup serving.
*I would link to the Weight Watchers site describing points but since they don't support Mozilla as a browser...
6. Web sites that are standards compliant enough for Mozilla to work.
Day One started at 3:15am and ended at 11:15pm, A long day, but exciting. I took a few pictures on the cell phone and should get them up in a photo album soon, most likely once I get back.
First impressions? I have never felt and may never again feel this excited about a job. I have spoken with virtually everyone here and with each conversation I have had, I am more and more certain that this is the right thing for me. A national organization that is small enough for me to make a huge impact but large enough that its success is virtually guaranteed. For example, a had a meeting with the chairman of the organization yesterday and I waited for him to finish a call with the CEO of a Fortune 50 company with him saying, "I talked to Karl about the President coming back and I feel good about it." Referring of course to THE President and his chief advisor.
That's the already a success part. The other was when he told me that my area is the model for virtually all future expansion the program which I am a part. It is on my shoulders to make it succeed, with help of course, but I am the only one on the ground. I feel blessed that I have become a part of something I can be proud of and completely support.
It'll be nice to wake up again and feel excited about going to work.
I am off to California in a little over nine hours now, and I am just starting to pack. Found out that I will be here in Los Angeles and here in San Francisco. Nice places to stay, but to get there, I have to fly this.
So I may be able to access the advertised T1 lines, but most likely, no updates until Saturday.
In March, I began using Weight Watchers and have since lost 45+ pounds. In that time, I have dropped clothing sizes and have had to replace my wardrobe with new clothes as I have lost the weight. Since I leave next Tuesday for four days with my new company, I needed to get new work clothes since I will be wearing a shirt and tie everyday unlike my current khakis/jeans and polo shirt.
Last night I went shopping and was disgruntled to discover that I had gained a clothing size again, even though I had lost another couple of pounds. So the suit I spent way too much on for the interview a month ago is a little too tight, I can't find pants that fit right, and I have five days to get the clothes, get them alterned, and have the shirts pressed before I get on the plane.
I am just a little frustrated trying to make it all work so Ii look my best while I am there since this will most likely by the only time I meet 95% other rest of the organization. Ugh.
